DAY 16: Reencaheragh to Vanentia Island

Leaving the B&B at Reencaheragh.

On a whim I decided to check out Valentia Island.

On the bridge to Valentia, looking inland (north east).

Just off the bridge.  One of the Skellig tour operators is based here.

There's an official welcome (Failte) and an unofficial welcome (welcome tithe zoo).

I started to explore the island and found other's doing the same.  With such a wide expanse of
land it's difficult to believe that this is a small island.  This is a ruin at Clynacartan.

I have no idea where I'm going.  Hading towards Feaghmaan East, I think.

The Dingle Peninsula in the distance.

Another ruined house and by gods, a real scarecrow!

This landscape feature looks interesting.  A ring fort perhaps?

This ruin is right next to the occupied cottages in the last photo.

So cute!  Thatch!

Nothing much to see at the end of this road so I turned around and made my way back.

A more modern ruin on the same road.

Making my way down to the lighthouse on the left of the picture.

This is the road?

This is the road!

More ruins.  Unbelievable how many there are!

Looking back up towards Feaghmaan East, Valentia Island, Kerry.

Cows lying down means it's going to rain.

Still making my way towards the lighthouse, yet another ruin.

As a walker it would probably be wise not to dress in the same colour as the rocks.

As close as Ic an get to the lighthouse.

Time to back track.

Feaghmaan East.

Good luck getting back up that hill.

I literally decide to take the high road.

I was so enraptured by the stunning view that I didn't realise that this road was taking me
to that strange rock formation.

Panorama beginning here...

... and ending here.

Now... WTF?

Hang on, there's something back here.

This is known as 'the Grotto' and is a slate quarry.

This is as far as Ic an come so it's time to head back.

I hadn't expected a tiny island to be so beautiful and interesting.

And to think I was not going to bother to take a look!

Most of the road don't have names, just signs pointing directions and destinations.

In search for a B&B and there's supposed to be a one on a estate down here.

When I read that Valentia had a sub-tropical rainforest, I didn't believe it.

Google Street View didn't run all the way to the B&B, so by my 'rules' I can't stay
there overnight.

Making my way back the views are amazing.

Making my way towards the north part of the island.

What's this up ahead?

Castle?

Nope.

Graveyard.

Down another mystery street.

Back through the rainforest.  This road is directly beneath the previous road with the rainforest.

Now on the hunt for a B&B.  It's 80 KPH down there?  I'd be frightened to do 40.

That guy's not going 80.  Turn 80 maybe.

The Heritage Centre.

Uptown Knightstown.

Downtown Knightstown.

It pays to advertise.  I saw B&B painted on the pub's fence.

My digs for the night.
